“Change happens through movement, and movement heals” Joseph Pilates
History of Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. As a sickly child he was determined to overcome his ailments and started doing physical exercises like gymnastics and bodybuilding. When World War 1 broke out, Pilates was interned in a camp on the Isle of Man. Here he started developing apparatus to help rehabilitate the injured and the sick. After the war, Joseph left for America. On his way there he met his future wife, Clara. In 1926 he opened his first studio in New York.
The dance community embraced his methods. Pilates had a passion for animals and animal movements, as is evident in the names of many of his exercises. Pilates believed in a holistic approach to health and fitness. He said that “Physical fitness is the first requisite to happiness”
The Pilates method has become very popular among athletes, celebrities and the health profession due to the many benefits it offers.
About Yoga
This ancient art has many medically proven benefits. Become aware of your body’s alignment, posture and movement. Become more flexible, relax the body and mind and become more energetic and peaceful. Try a class to experience the wonder of Yoga.
We offer a vin to yin style of yoga. This style marries the strong yang vinyasa yoga with the receptive yin yoga. The first half of the class follows a vinyasa style with sun salutations and strong standing flows. The yin half of the class on the other hand offers passive seated and supine poses held for 2-5 mins giving you a chance to slow down and turn inwards.
The yin practice promotes relaxation and stress relief while the vinyasa aids in releasing tension and anxiety. The combination of movement and stillness enhances mindfulness, improving focus and mental clarity.
We also teach a hatha style of yoga which is practiced more mindfully with a slower pace than the vinyasa yoga. We typically work towards a peak pose and incorporate some meditation and breath work. This style of yoga enhances strength, flexibility and balance.
